Livestock officials in Chai Nat have their hands full as they attempt to sterilise hundreds of stray dogs living around a landfill.

The needles were out on Wednesday at the dump next to the village of Khao Plong in Tambon Khao Tha Phra after photos of the mass of mutts spread on social networks.
The dogs, most suffering from malnutrition, live off rotten food dumped at the landfill.

Online posters claimed there were more than 1,000 dogs and that 10 more were abandoned there every month.
Nopporn Kaewkanistharak, chief livestock development officer for Chai Nat, said he and Thammsak Oomyu, head of the tambon’s Administrative Organisation, inspected the area and found only about 200 stray dogs living around the landfill and in nearby woods.

Nopporn said officials from his office would use tranquiliser darts and gradually sterilise them all and vaccinate them against rabies.
He said officials would regularly revisit the site with fresh vaccine.
