Residents of northern and northeastern provinces were warned on Saturday to brace themselves for cold spells until January 2 when temperatures could drop by 5 to 8 degrees Celsius.

In a warning issued at 5am on Saturday, the Meteorological Department said a strong high-pressure system now covers upper Thailand and it will remain dominant until January 2, while the westerly trough will move to the North on Saturday and Sunday.
Affected areas are:
On Saturday: Outbreaks of thundershowers with strong winds over upper Thailand.
From Saturday to January 2: Cool to cold spells, with decreasing temperatures by 5-8C, and strong winds across first the North and then the Northeast, the Central including Bangkok and its vicinity, and the East regions. The South will get more rains with some heavy downpours affecting first Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan, then the other provinces heading south. In the Gulf of Thailand, there are strong wind waves with waves 2-3 meters high. All ships should proceed with caution, and small boats in the Gulf should stay ashore from 29 December, 2018, to 2 January, 2019.
