Pattani storm damage described as ‘not severe’

Pattani Governor Kraisorn Wisitwong said on Friday that damage from Tropical Storm Pabuk was not severe, but he warned agencies not to exaggerate the extent in their official reports in a bid for more relief funding.

Kraisorn presided at a meeting of agencies to assess damage from the storm in 12 districts that endured strong winds and heavy rain overnight.

Power was back on and the rain had stopped by Friday morning, but dark clouds were keeping authorities on alert for further danger, he said.

The storm caused power outages and knocked down trees in many areas, Kraisorn said.

Windows were blown out in the Nursing Science Building at Prince of Songkla University.

In Tambon Takaharang, Muang Pattani, a tree fell onto the home of Chaweewan Yayor, but she escaped injury.

Tents and stalls at the green market on Charoenpradit Road were damaged.

Kraisorn said he instructed all 12 district chiefs to provide aid where needed, while the provincial public health office would send teams around to help anyone injured, especially at the temporary shelters set up in six districts.

He warned that any officials found exaggerating the extent of storm damage in their reports to higher authorities would face severe punishment.
