Leatherback returns to lay more eggs on Phang-Nga beach

Leatherback returns to lay more eggs on Phang-Nga beach

A large leatherback turtle has laid 112 eggs on a beach in Phang-Nga’s Takua Pa district, the Eighth Marine and Coastal Resource Management Office’s patrol team discovered on Tuesday morning.

The team found the eggs in a hole north of Khuk Khak Beach at 12.30am, office director Prathom Rassamee said.
As the trace of sand around the hole suggested the mother turtle had a 165cm-wide flipper radius and its shell was about 92cm-wide, the marine academics suspect it is the same turtle that had laid eggs at the same beach area – 430 metres from the newly discovered hole – a month ago, Prathom said.

As the newly laid eggs could be damaged by sea tides, the officials and expert villagers removed them to a safer spot.
They found that 64 of the eggs were in good condition, but the other 48 were sadly incomplete, he said, adding that it was expected that the viable ones would hatch within 60 to 74 days.

Leatherback turtles, a species which is believed to be close to extinction worldwide, have rarely been seen laying eggs on Phang-Nga beaches since the 2004 tsunami.
