Thon Thamrongnawasawat of Kasetsart University posted a 15-second video clip showing the fishermen releasing the turtle from a net off Phang Nga.
Thon said he was not sure whether the turtle was the same one that had laid eggs on Khao Na Yak beach inside the Thai Muang-Khao Lampee in Phang Nga's Thai Muang district, because it was caught not far from the beach.
Thon said the turtle is probably not badly injured and should survive, thanks to the fishing boat using a legal type of fishing net that causes minimal harm.
Thana Ketsa-ard, the skipper of the fishing boat, Thanakorn 99, confirmed that his boat had caught the turtle about 12 nautical miles from Thai Muang district and he had his fishing crew immediately release it back to the sea.
Thana said the turtle weighed about 300 to 400 kilograms and he and the fishing crew were happy to be able to release the very rare turtle.
