Elephants kill monk living in seclusion in Chachoengsao

A monk who ignored a warning about wild elephants while setting up a tent on an oil-palm plantation in Chachoengsao for a period of seclusion was killed by an unknown number of them on Tuesday night.

Phra Prapop, 35, who’s lay name was Prapop Chanphaikhor, was apparently dragged from his tent and kicked repeatedly until he died.
Tha Takiab district chief Chan Paenphet reported the news on Wednesday morning, saying Prapop and another monk from Wat Khao Charoensuk in Phanom Sarakham district had set up their tents among the palm trees to practise seclusion.
The second monk was staying in another monk’s tent elsewhere when the attack occurred.
Chamras Iamsopha, the village head at Ban Thung Yai Chee, said he warned the two monks they were erecting their tents Tuesday close to a route often used by about 15 elephants from nearby Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary and advised them to find a different location.
