Foreign couple photographed drinking atop historic Chiang Mai wall

Foreign couple photographed drinking atop historic Chiang Mai wall

Chiang Mai, tourists and historic sites just don’t seem to mix well. This time, two people are in trouble after they were photographed having a drink sitting casually on top of one of Chiang Mai’s historic walls.

The Chiang Mai News Facebook page on Monday called on the authorities to take action.

As usual, netizens saw the tourists’ behaviour as inappropriate.

But many say that, rather than snapping photos and doing nothing, they should have told the couple to get down and alerted them to the sign forbidding such a cultural faux pas.

The post had attracted 90 comments and 42 shares as of mid-afternoon.

Last year, a man from the English city of Liverpool and a Canadian woman were each fined Bt100,000 and threatened with jail for spray-painting at Chiang Mai’s Tha Phae gate.
