Responding to an emergency call, Pol Sgt Kowit Srisai rushed from Nang Rong police station and plunged into the reservoir to help Taptim bring Thongliam back to shore.
The drama began when Taptim heard that a woman was trying to hang herself from the reservoir guardrail. She grabbed a fruit knife and ran to the reservoir only to find that Thongliam, with a loin-cloth noose placed around her neck, had changed her mind, climbed the fence and jumped into the reservoir. Taptim jumped in after her and managed to keep her afloat.
Thonglam's son told police that his mother had been suffering from depression.
