Cycling event raises Bt6m for vocational training centre for disabled, well below expectations

A cycling event to raise funds for a vocational training centre for the disabled has ended with Bt6 million worth of funding, far below the amount the organisers were hoping for.

The “No One Left Behind Year 2” project aims to raise Bt118 million for the completion of an Asean occupational training centre for persons with disabilities in Chiang Mai’s Chiang Dao district.
The project raised more than Bt32 million through a similar cycling event last year.
This year’s event involved 20 visually impaired participants, accompanied by 20 volunteers, who cycled through 15 provinces from Bangkok to another occupational training centre for the disabled in Nakhon Pathom’s Nakhon Chai Si district.
The cyclothon lasted 14 days from February 9-22, covering a total distance of 1,500 kilometres.
Prof Wiriya Namsiripongpun, president of the Universal Foundation for Persons with Disabilities and organiser of the event, said that although the target had not been reached, this did not mean it was a failure.
“It’s just the beginning of raising awareness among people in society, in order to recognise the capability of disabled people and change the attitude towards them,” he explained.
He added that he now had to find other ways to raise more funds to complete the construction of the centre.
