A Lao man was severely injured after he turned a homemade pistol on himself following a quarrel with his Thai wife in Yasothon's Lerng Nok Tha district on Tuesday, police said.

Police said Suriya Chaichart, 38, shot himself in front of the house of his father-in-law in Moo 6 village in Tambon Samakkhi.

He was taken to the district hospital before he was passed on to the Ubon Ratchathani Hospital.

The father-in-law, Samrong Chompupuen, 61, told police that Suriya has been living with his daughter for over 10 years and they have two children.

A few days ago, the couple had a quarrel and Samrong's daughter moved back to live with him. Samrong said Suriya came to talk to his daughter, telling her he would like to hold her hand for the last time. Then he reportedly walked back to his motorcycle and shot himself in his right temple.
