Chinese tourist caught stealing camera from Spanish couple

A Chinese man was caught stealing a camera belonging to a Spanish couple in Chiang Mai on Tuesday.

The incident, which was captured on CCTV, took place at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. The couple had forgotten their GoPro camera on a bench and when they returned to pick it up, the camera had disappeared.
After receiving a complaint, police checked the CCTV footage, which showed the camera being picked up by a man wearing a large hat. The man had been sitting behind the Spanish couple, and CCTV footage showed him moving to the bench the couple was on, and snaffling the camera by hiding it under his large hat.
The man, who was part of a Chinese tour group, was later tracked down to the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Centre. When approached by police, he immediately handed it over, saying he intended to hand it in, but did not know how or where to report the matter.
Channel 7 reported that the incident was put down to “misunderstanding” and that the camera has been returned to the rightful owners. According to Thai media, the Chinese man has not been charged with theft.
Meanwhile, a British tourist who used the same excuse for picking up a mobile phone left outside Chiang Mai Airport in February, was charged with theft and ended up behind bars for 10 days.
