Krabi man arrested for stealing protected red-backed sea-eagles
A man was arrested on Thursday morning for raising three red-backed sea-eagles or brahminy kites at his house in Krabi’s Koh Lanta district.
Suwat Suksiri, chief of the Thung Thale Wildlife Sanctuary, led police and wildlife officials to arrest Nirat Lakthong, 52, at his house in Moo 6 village in Tambon Ao Luek.
The officials found three red-backed sea-eagles in a cage that are about two months old.
Nirat claimed that he got the sea-eagles from friends and he raised them as pets. But officials allege that Nirat raised the sea-eagles to sell to resort and hotel operators to show to tourists.
Nirat was accused of stealing young sea-eagles from their nests and raising them to sell for Bt5,000 each, Suwat said.
He was charged with violating the wildlife conservation and protection act.
