Officer, suspect injured in shootout over Chiang Mai drug bust

Three alleged drug couriers were arrested in Chiang Mai’s Mae Rim district early Wednesday following a gunfight that injured a suspect and a police officer, police said.

Acting on a tip-off, Mae Rim police monitored road checkpoints throughout Tuesday night until officers at a traffic booth in Tambon Rimtai noticed a motorcycle leading the way for a pick-up truck at 1.20am.
When police flagged them to stop at the checkpoint, the motorcycle climbed the pavement to avoid the barrier and sped off.
When the pickup was stopped, a man on the back jumped down and ran into a roadside forest, chased by Pol Captain Kamchorn Wongsuwan, deputy inspector of the Mae Rim police station.
The suspect opened fire on Kamchorn with his homemade sawn-off shotgun, hitting the officer’s left arm. Kamchorn returned fire and hit the suspect at his waist before police seized his gun.
The injured suspect was identified as Wongsakorn Jala, 21.
Both the injured policeman and suspect were rushed to the district hospital.
The two other suspects were identified as Jafa Jakao, 22 and Somporn Jalor, 30.
Police found 200,000 methamphetamine pills in the pickup.
The suspects said they were hired by a Lahu man in Chiang Mai’s Chai Prakan district to take the drug from Fang district and deliver it to a recipient in Muang district.
