Kamtan had become a favourite and was popular with visitors to the camp.

The camp owner Eakkachai Uenghok said: &ldquo;The elephant was at our camp for eight years. Many tourists loved him as he was very nice and never attacked anyone.

&ldquo;Three months ago he was in musth. So we moved him out from the other elephants.&rdquo; 
Musth is a periodic condition in bull elephants, characterised by aggressive behaviour and accompanied by a rise in reproductive hormones.&nbsp; 
Krabi livestock officials say the elephant may have had an&aring; underlying or undetected problem.
