Some 1,500 Thais and Malaysians took part in a cycling event on the border of Songkhla province on Sunday morning.

Democrat Party leader Jurin Laksanawisit presided over the opening ceremony of “Pan 2 Dan Sadao Pratu Su Asean” (Cycling between Padang Besar and Sadao border checkpoints as the Gateway to Asean) and also led party members to join the cyclists.

The event, organised by Nation Multimedia Group (NMG) and the Songkhla provincial administrative organisation (PAO), offered two distance options – 35 kilometres and 64km for participants.
Somchai Meesen, chief executive officer of NMG, said the cycling event was aimed at promoting good health among the public and cyclists and to promote tourism in Songkhla. “This activity wouldn’t have happened without support from the Songkhla PAO and other sponsors and, especially the cyclists who showed up in great numbers for this event,” Somchai said.

Songkhla PAO chief Nipon Boonyamanee said the event also helped officially launch the 32-kilometre Ban Thai Jang Lon-Ban Padang Besar Road, which was funded by a budget from the Department of Rural Roads, from the southern border provincial cluster's coffers, and the Songkhla PAO. The road was built to support the growth of this key border city of Songkhla, he said. Both the Sadao and Padang Besar checkpoints reported combined trade worth about Bt500 million per year.
