Cabinet cuts subsidies for SRT, BMTA

The Cabinet on Tuesday made big cuts to the proposed subsidies of the money-losing State Railway of Thailand and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, a government spokesman said Wednesday.

Pol Col Athisit Chainuwat, assistant government spokesman, said the SRT requested an annual subsidy of Bt7.076 billion but the Cabinet cut it to Bt3.238 billion.
He said the Cabinet also cut the subsidy of the BMTA to Bt1.775 billion from its request of Bt4.976 billion.
Among other things, the Cabinet rejected the request for Bt1.946 billion to subsidise the cost of operating air-conditioned bus fleets because there is no evidence that the BMTA is losing money because of the price control on fares, the spokesman added.
