Sa Kaew industrial dump draws swarm of scavengers

Nearly 100 security officials inspecting a site in Sa Kaew on Sunday where a mountain of industrial and electronic waste has been dumped found 41 undocumented Cambodian workers separating the trash amid piles of car parts.

Wang Nam Yen district residents had begged the authorities to check on the legality of the 20-rai site in Ban Nong Kae (Moo 8) where industrial waste from overseas has been piling up for past two months.

Residents are particularly concerned because a nearby waterway passes through communities and Zone C forestland should be protected from industrial contamination.
Army, police and other officials went for a look and found the Cambodians – 24 men and 17 women – toiling away, salvaging auto parts, wiring and circuitry.

They were taken to Sa Kaew Immigration Police to be charged with working in Thailand illegally, followed by deportation.
Sa Kaew Governor Wichit Chatpaisit and Department of Pollution Control officials plan to inspect the site on Monday (July 8).
