Couple held for allegedly deceiving Thais of Bt500,000 for jobs in South Korea

A couple have been arrested for allegedly deceiving ten people of Bt50,000 each after promising to get them jobs as farm hands in South Korea.

Crime Suppression Division (CSD) deputy commander Pol Col Surapong Chartsut told a press conference on Monday that Porntip Padtayasa, 36, and Tawan Monthong, 29, were arrested in Uttaradit’s Faktha district on Friday.
The two were held under arrest warrants issued by the Bua Yai Court on March 1.
Police obtained the warrants after the ten people in Nakhon Ratchasima and Chaiyaphum jointly filed a complaint with the CSD, saying the couple promised them jobs as farm workers in South Korea and they would be paid Bt40,000 to Bt60,000 a month, Surapong said.
Porntip allegedly told the victims in 2017 that she used to work in South Korea so she could help to get them employed there without any of them having to undergo a health check first.
Each of the victims allegedly transferred the demanded “operation fee” of Bt50,000 in 2017 but none of them was sent to work in South Korea as promised.
The victims decided to file a joint complaint in 2018 after there was still no sign of any job.
Surapong said Porntip was wanted in nine other fraud cases while Tawan was sought in two.
The CSD learned that the couple was hiding in Uttaradit. They were arrested on Friday while walking down a road in Faktha district.
