BMA to end last Klong Toei street food sites

Food vendors will be removed from the last nine spots in Bangkok’s Klong Toei district where they have been allowed to operate, as the capital continues a programme to eliminate the street food vending that draws international tourists.

On Monday, Suchai Amorndararat, director of the Klong Toei district office, held a meeting with vendors that had staked out the last nine remaining sidewalk spots allowed in the district.
The vendors learned at the meeting that their spots would be eliminated over the next 30-60 days, depending on the location. Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has coordinated with several markets to take up the street vendors to sell there, Suchai said.
The street vendors can instead sell at the Klong Toei 1 Market, Klong Toei 2 Market, Plawan Food Centre on Soi Sukhumvit 16, and Suan Sai Market.
The 102 vendors at the Monday meeting were joined by representatives of government agencies concerned, including the Tha Rua police station and the Army’s peacekeeping unit for Klong Toei.
Suchai told the vendors that Klong Toei district once had 28 street vending locations, but 11 of them were discontinued last year and another eight cancelled last month.
Bangkok has been praised by CNN as the world capital for street food.
Suchai said the locations to be discontinued are:
* Klong Toei 1 Market’s sidewalk
* Klong Toei Market’s sidewalk
* Sunthorn Kosa road’s sidewalk outside the Klong Toei 1 market
* The sidewalk on Soi Sukhumvit 16
* The sidewalk on Soi Sukhumvit 20
* The sidewalk on Soi Sai Nam Pheung near the BMW showroom
* The sidewalk on Soi Sai Nam Pheung near Esso petrol station
* Sidewalks on Soi Sukhumvit 4
* Sidewalks on Soi Saen Suk.
