Village homes, farmlands in Phayao inundated with floodwaters
Two days of heavy downpours have triggered floodwaters that inundated farmlands and people’s homes in Ban That Khing Kaeng of Phayao’s Jun district today (July 31).
A flood of up to one-metre-deep prompted local residents in the pictured village of Tambon Phra That Khing Kaeng to move belongings to higher grounds away to escape the rising intruding water, while Ban That Khing Kaeng School was forced to close until the situation had returned to normal.
As rainfalls, which started on Tuesday, continued through Wednesday, water levels rose in various canals in Jun and Pong districts of Phayao, sending floodwater to low-lying farmlands and homes. Police, Army, and local administrative workers were moving in to aid the flood-affected as at the time of writing.
Takham Chaiyasathan, an 85-year-old resident of the flood-hit tambon Phra That Khing Kaeng, recently passed away of an age-related ailment and was identified as a body donor to Chiang Mai University’s Faculty of Medicine.
But efforts to transport Takham’s body to Chiang Mai on Wednesday proved difficult as the deceased man’s neighbourhood was under deep floodwater and impassible by car. Jun district chief Adul Phromwat borrowed a flat-bottom boat from the Wiang Lo Wildlife Sanctuary along with 20 officials to aid the donor transport out of the flood area and on to Chiang Mai.
