Pai residents warned of flooding as torrential rains boost river level

Residents in Mae Hong Son’s Pai district have been warned of possible floods from rising water levels in Pai River caused by heavy rainfall measuring 93 millimetres in 12 hours at tambon Wiang Nua’s Ban Muang Noi, Sunthorn Kanthamala, an official from the Provincial Meteorological Station, said on August 16.

Pai district chief Sangkhom Khatchiangsaen said he has alerted local administration officials, kamnans and village headmen to ensure riverside residents move their belongings and pets to higher ground, adding that shelters will be set up in temples or schools.
Meanwhile, Thanongsak Nirakorn, director of the Third Hydrology Division in Mae Hong Son, said Ban Muang Paen in tambon Tham Lod of Pang Mapha district had also had 90mm of rain, resulting in a forest flood that damaged a local bridge earlier in the day. This rainfall will make the water level in Pai River rise fast, which may lead to floods in the downstream area of Muang district, he added.
