Thai Chamber of Commerce tackles plastic, food waste mess

The Thai Chamber of Commerce has marshalled its network of all 120,000 organisation members across Thailand to help solve the problem of plastic and food waste as part of its Circular Economy policy.

It will also join forces with related state and private organisations to tackle the predicament.
Harald Link, chairman of the chamber’s Circular Economy steering committee, said on Thursday that the chamber has been aware of the negative environmental impact stemming from waste from the industrial, service and farm sectors.

Looming catastrophe: Earth on fire, oceans dying
The chamber has also asked the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) to study the source of marine trash and how to solve this problem.
TDRI president Somkiat Tangkitvanich said the major origins of marine waste in the country’s seas include communities and shops near rivers and shores, beach tourism, and poorly managed landfills. Fishing boats are also contributing to the problem.
Most of the trash are plastic bags and foam boxes.
He said the government should declare the combating of waste a national agenda.
It should also charge the public for using plastic bags and launch campaigns to reduce the use of plastic.
