Suphan Buri man arrested for allegedly robbing gold shop

A man was arrested early Thursday for allegedly stealing Bt1.97 million worth of gold chains from a gold shop in the Tesco Lotus shopping mall in Suphan Buri’s Muang district on Wednesday.

Pol Col Kritsana Pattanacharoen, deputy spokesman of the Royal Thai Police, said Suphan Buri police managed to track down and arrest the suspect at his house in Moo 4 village in Tambon Ban Chang in Suphan Buri’s Song Phi Nong district.
The suspect was identified as Songpol Kerdsrilek, 35.
Songpol allegedly walked into the Yaowaraj M Gold shop inside the shopping mall at 1.30 pm on Wednesday wearing a crash helmet with visor and carrying a bag. He then threw a large rock at the glass display and pulled out a gun pistol to intimidate the female staff, who fled into the back of the shop.
The staff said the man then stuffed gold necklaces into his bag and rushed out, speeding away on his motorcycle which did not have a license plate. The staff said gold necklaces weighing 87 baht or worth Bt1.97 million were taken.
The police spokesman said police obtained a warrant and arrested the suspect at his home, where they found 36 gold necklaces and a 9mm pistol as well as the motorcycle allegedly used in the robbery.
The suspect was charged with robbery and carrying a firearm in a public place.
The spokesman said Police Commissioner General Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda commended the investigative team of the Muang Suphan Buri police station for making the arrest so quickly after the robbery.
The spokesman said the national police chief wanted all police stations and provincial bureaus nationwide to step up security to prevent more robberies following a spate of gold shop raids recently.
