Embassy seeks to meet with Thai student arrested in Egypt over alleged IS interest

The Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo has updated its Facebook page about the progress of a case in which a Thai student in Egypt was arrested on September 24 after photos were allegedly found on his mobile phone that might be linked to the IS terrorist group.

The phone also allegedly included a clip in which a Thai student acknowledged supporting an Islamic revolution via the social media of a television station.
The Embassy posting noted that they have followed progress in the case from the beginning and were aware that the Thai student was now in custody of the Egyptian Security Agency while they check to see if there is any connection with IS.
It also said The Royal Thai Embassy had filed a request on September 26 to Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to meet with the student. The posting added that the Embassy was closely coordinating with a senior representatives of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to expedite the investigation and that the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had sent the matter to the security agencies.
The posting said the Embassy had coordinated with the assistance of the senior representatives Office of the Supreme Islamic Leadership (Grand Imam) and the Egyptian Security Agency to follow up on the matter and requested to in future meet with the Thai student in another way.
The Embassy warned Thai people in Egypt to take care in travelling to risky locations, including by coordinating with the Thai Students Association in Cairo under royal patronage, as well as the United Thai Student Club. Thai students living in Egypt should take caution to avoid interfering with either the internal politics of Egypt or in situations that randomly occur, as well as avoiding security risks and related situations.
“Please be informed that the Embassy is very concerned about the safety of Thai students. However, the arrest is a security issue to which the Egyptian authorities have attached importance,” the Embassy posted. “The Embassy must find a way to provide assistance to the student and will coordinate for further assistance through other means.”
