“We have already treated the first 20 tonnes of premium-grade longans ready for shipping to China next month,” he said.
Located in the Longan Treatment for Export Institute in Laoyao sub district of Lamphun’s Ban Hong district, TISTR’s treatment facility is certified under the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and the Good Fumigation Practices of Sulfur Dioxide (GFP) standards by the Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
“The facility can provide a fumigation service to local farmers at a maximum capacity of 100 tonnes per day or 9,000 tonnes annually,” said Sayan. “Moreover, our machines are highly efficient in reducing sulfur dioxide emissions as well as residue on longan’s skin, thanks to the total gas-recycling system that has zero wastewater and has minimal environmental impacts.”
“The machine’s only byproduct is gypsum, which can be used for soil improvement,” he added.
According to the deputy director, fruits and vegetables treated with sulfur dioxide will last 30-45 days longer after harvest, maximizing export potential especially to faraway markets.
“This facility is a result of TISTR’s mission to use science, technology and innovation to improve the country’s agriculture and export sectors, adding more value to our products while preserving the environment of local communities,” said Sayan.
