ETDA, TISI join forces to protect online consumers

The Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA)’s director Surangkana Wayuparb and Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI)’s secretary general Wanchai Panomchai have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as part of the Asean agreement on online consumer protection in e-commerce.

Under the MOU, ETDA and TISI will exchange information on monitoring and identify products with no TISI standard certification so as to protect Thai consumers against the risk of using them.
Moreover, the MOU tasks TISI with issuing electronic credentials and supporting academic coordination aimed at improving the knowledge of organisations and their staff on digital standards and technology.
“We do not only deal with e-commerce fraud but we also handle cases of sub-standard products which can harm consumers,” the EDTA director said. “Guidelines for helping consumers are important in dealing with such cases, and this MOU is an important step forward in supporting consumers’ online protection.”
To tackle the problem of product standards and improve the e-commerce service in Thailand so that it meets international standards, ETDA will help those selling products and services online to gain acceptance by promoting product safety and reliability to target consumers, Surangkana added.
