Corrections Department in move to develop prisoners' vocational skills

The Corrections Department has joined hands with a university and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to improve prisoners’ vocational skills.

On Thursday (December 12), Pol Colonel Narat Svetanan, director-general of the Corrections Department, signed a memorandum of understanding with Jongrak Watcharinrat, acting president of Kasetsart University, and Chonrungsee Chalermchaikit, president of the Federation of Thai SMEs, for a cooperative project to develop prisoners' social and vocational skills.
“Under this MoU, the Corrections Department will work together with Kasetsart University and SME operators in organising training courses and activities that promote social and career skills of prisoners, aiming especially to familiarise them with new innovations that have emerged while they have been in correctional facilities,” he said.
“Vocational courses provided under this MoU aim to equip learners with fundamental knowledge and skills that will enable them to start their own business without relying on employers or entrepreneurs, which has always been a challenge for ex-convicts.”
The director-general further added that the Federation of Thai SMEs will support the programme by providing intensive training courses based on prisoners' skills and aptitude, aiming to improve their skills to technician or specialist level which will help expand their career opportunities. “Moreover, members of the federation have agreed to provide training programmes at their facilities for parolees, which is a great opportunity to guarantee employment after the correctional process,” he added.
