Road carnage recedes but still appalling, minister admits

The total number of road accidents and deaths between December 27 and January 1 decreased compared to last year, Interior Minister Anupong Paochinda pointed out on Thursday (January 2).

But he acknowledged that the government remains uneasy with the statistics from the first six days of the “seven dangerous days” of the New Year holidays because they are still much higher than those seen in other countries.
He said his ministry would analyse the figures and devise more effective measures to curb accidents.
“The ministry will compare the accident numbers on both main and secondary roads and determine which measures are the most practical in each case,” he said.
The World Health Organisation in 2018 ranked Thailand the worst among 175 countries in terms of deaths and injuries in road accidents.
