Coronavirus claims first fatality in Hong Kong

A 39-year-old male became the first person to die in Hong Kong after being infected by the new coronavirus.


The Hospital Authority confirmed at about 10.30am on Tuesday that the man had died in Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung after suffering a sudden heart failure, according to medical sources.
The Whampoa Garden resident was previously identified as Hong Kong’s 13th confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, which originated in Wuhan city in China. His death is the second fatality linked with the outbreak reported outside mainland China. The Philippines had announced the first death outside China linked to the new coronavirus late last week.
The Hong Kong victim had visited Wuhan, the provincial capital of China's Hubei province, on January 21 and returned to Hong Kong two days later via the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link, before developing fever on January 31. The man was admitted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei before being moved to isolation at Princess Margaret Hospital.
The deceased man had lived in Whampoa Garden with his 72-year-old mother, who later became the 15th case with no recent history of travel, the government revealed
