Deaths from new coronavirus exceed the Sars total

The number of deaths worldwide from the new coronavirus overtook the fatalities caused by the Sars epidemic in 2003, with the death toll rising to 811, and the number of infected cases reaching 37,198.


The National Commission of Public Health of China reported that as of February 8, death toll from the new strain of the coronavirus had risen to 811, 89 more deaths reported in the mainland alone and a cumulative total of 37,198 infected cases.
The severe acute respiratory illness (Sars) epidemic had caused 774 deaths.
Some 2,649 new coronavirus patients have recovered and 28,942 people are being monitored.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that Sars, which spread between late 2003 to mid-2003 in China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and 25 other countries, had a total of 774 deaths -- 349 in mainland China, 299 in Hong Kong and 37 in Taiwan. The death rate was 9.6 per cent of infection, with 8,096 people infected. In comparison, the death rate from the new coronavirus is around 2 per cent.
Apart from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, the new coronavirus has spread to at least 24 countries -- Thailand, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Australia, Malaysia, Germany, United States, France, Vietnam, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Italy, Russia, United Kingdom, Cambodia, Finland, India, Nepal, Philippines, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden.
Meanwhile, the situation is grim aboard the Diamond Princess Cruise Ship with at least 64 international patients infected with the novel coronavirus. The Japanese government has quarantined the luxury liner at the port in Yokohama since February 3.
