China reports 57 more deaths, mystery over new US Covid-19 case

China has reported 57 more deaths while US authorities are perplexed over a new Covid-19 female victim.

China’s National Health Commission reported 1,188 new confirmed cases with 57 additional deaths as of Friday (February 28). Among the new confirmed cases of infection, 318 were reported in Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak, while 41 people also died there from illness related to the virus. Beijing also reported two deaths.
Mainland China now has 83,369 confirmed cases, of whom 34,000 have recovered, while the death toll had gone up to 2,857. The Covid-19 situation is expected to be under control within April, Chinese epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan said.
Meanwhile, a patient in California has been diagnosed with Covid-19 even though the person had not travelled to any area known to have the virus, or been exposed to anyone infected, the CDC said on Wednesday night. Her condition was reported as critical. “Whether this person can actually talk or not is the question. She’s been incubated, and so may not be in a position to discuss it,” top CDC officers told a CNN reporter.
The United States has 60 confirmed cases of novel coronavirus, including 42 former passengers on the Diamond Princess cruise ship and three who had returned from Wuhan. Some 8,400 people in California are being monitored.
