Baht strengthens to 31.52 against dollar

The baht opened at Bt31.52 to the US dollar on Monday morning (March 2), strengthening from Friday’s close of Bt31.56, and is likely to move at between Bt31.40 to Bt31.60, SCB Securities senior market strategist Jitipol Puksamatanan said.

He said that the Purchasing Managing Index (PMI) this week should be monitored. “China’s Caxim Manufacturing this morning was estimated to contract to the level of 40 points, while ISM Non-Manufacturing PMI of the US was expected to be stable at 55 points,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Super Tuesday of the US Democratic primaries on March 3 and employment numbers on Friday (March 6) would be worth monitoring as well, he said.
“Those US economic numbers would affect the interest policy rate, as well as the dollar’s rate,” the strategist said.
In the financial markets, the yen and euro have been strong after correction in the US financial market, since the carry trade in the market decreased.
The financial market on Monday was predicted to be pressured by the US Federal Reserve, which sent a signal of lowering the interest rate at its next meeting.
“The baht would strengthen in the short period, with liquidity in low levels, and would move at between Bt31.25 to Bt31.85 per dollar this week,” he said.
