Govt announces measures to assist workers returning from South Korea

The Department of Employment at the Ministry of Labour has announced measures for Thai labourers in South Korea who have expressed willingness to return to Thailand due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus in South Korea.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, over 5,000 Thais have contacted South Korean immigration offices and are prepared to leave the country, while the total number of Thais working in South Korean is 22,257 (as of January 2020).

The measures are:
1 All Thais travelling from South Korea must undergo screening procedures at the airports as per the Ministry of Public Health’s standard, including a 14-day quarantine.
2 Those who are members of Overseas Workers Fund will be entitled to Bt15,000 compensation. This compensation is also available to all member workers who return from countries that have announced the Covid-19 outbreak.
3 The Ministry of Labour will coordinate with the offices of labour affairs in South Korea to make sure that Thai labourers receive their pending wages and benefits from their employers and pursue legal action if necessary.
4 The Department of Employment has prepared over 81,562 domestic jobs nationwide for Thai labourers returning from overseas. Furthermore, the department will provide various supporting programmes for those who wish to pursue careers as freelance or self-employed, as well as those who wish to resume working overseas when the situation improves.
