Cabinet ministers pony up to help MDs, nurses

Members of the Cabinet are putting a month’s worth of their state wages into a fund to buy medical supplies for the battle against the Covid-19 virus.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said on Thursday (March 5) other government officials will also be asked to chip in, though they won’t be obliged to give up a full month’s salary.
“We’ve started with the Cabinet because we believe representatives of other groups can establish their own funds, so it’s not necessary for everyone to join ours,” he said.
He said the Cabinet was not considering dipping into a disaster relief fund maintained by the Office of the Prime Minister.
“We clarified the permanent secretary of that office that it’s not related, because our Covid-19 fund will be used to help doctors and nurses, including buying medical supplies and facemasks,” Wissanu said. “This fund will be closed once the situation is resolved.”
He added that the Cabinet had earmarked Bt250 million for the Interior Ministry to procure more facemasks.
“We’ll have to wait to see whether that amount will be sufficient.”
