Extra mobile data , faster access sought for people working from homes

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will propose to the Cabinet that existing telecom consumers be given extra mobile data and faster broadband Internet access in support of the government's "work from home" directive amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

Under the proposal, mobile phone users will be given an extra 10 gigabytes of data usage per person per month for three months, said NBTC secretary general Takorn Tantasith today.
Once approved, the measure will come into effect immediately until June 30.
However, it will be limited to mobile phone subscribers as of the date the Cabinet approves the proposal.
The cost is to be deducted from the remaining upfront installment payment of the spectrum that telecom operators have paid the NBTC.
It will also propose that broadband Internet operators offer maximum Internet connection speed to customers. In the case of fibre broadband service technology, the download speed should be at least 100 megabits per second.
Takorn said he would ask the cabinet to urgently implement these measures.
