Thailand reports 107 new cases of Covid-19

Thailand's total number of Covid-19 cases rose to 934, after 107 new infections were confirmed over a 24-hour period, Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Ministry of Public Health, said on Wednesday (March 25).

The cases can be divided into three groups.

Those in the first group of 27 are connected to cluster cases -- four people had attended a boxing event in a stadium, five had worked and been to entertainment venues, four had attended religious ceremonies and 14 had had close contact with others previously confirmed as infected. They included a freelancer, a company employee, merchant, students, taxi drivers, police and prisoners.

The second group comprised 13 people of whom six had just returned from overseas (2 Thais and 4 foreigners -- British, Finn, American, and German), five were working in crowded areas or close to foreigners, and two are doctors -- one of them is a surgeon who got a mild condition working with 25 medical staff who now need to self-quarantine.

The last group of 67 are being investigated on the source of the infection.

Meanwhile, 13 people have fully recovered and returned home.

As of March 25, the total number of confirmed cases in the country stands at 934 -- 860 are under treatment, 70 have recovered and been discharged, and there have been four deaths.

More than 407,000 cases have been confirmed in 169 countries and regions, double the tally of the previous week. There have been at least 18,000 deaths globally.
