Stay home, pumpuang is on the way

Stay home, pumpuang is on the way

With the Covid-19 virus keeping millions of Bangkok area residents homebound, the venerable “pumpuang” truck comes to the fore, bringing essential market items to the neighbourhoods.

Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit, who is also a deputy prime minister, said on Wednesday (March 25) that more than 200 Blue Flag pumpuang trucks have been mustered to deliver needed goods during the crisis.

The trucks will have for sale at “reasonable prices” rice, duck and chicken eggs, palm oil, instant noodles, canned fish and handwash gels, Jurin said.

“If it’s not enough, the Department of Internal Trade will be monitoring daily demand and the ministry will add more,” he said.
“We will also encourage online retailers and delivery services.”

Jurin plans to discuss the situation with representatives of Line Man, Lalamove, Foodpanda and Grab on Thursday (March 26).
“We know that many companies have increased staff during the crisis. We want to make sure people are getting the best service and feel comfortable in their homes when it’s not always easy getting out to go shopping.”
