Transport use slows by only 40% – much lower than govt expectations

Nationwide transport use decreased by only 40 per cent after the emergency decree was announced – far lower than the 90 per cent expected by the government.

Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration spokesman Taweesin Visanuyothin said that after the emergency was clamped on March 28, the transportation rate of public buses decreased by 45.5 per cent and personal cars by 41.3 per cent – 2 million to 1.2 million.
The number of MRT and BTS passengers dropped from 300,000 to 40,000 a day, but statistics show this will not be enough to prevent Covid-19 from spreading.
Public Health Ministry permanent secretary Sukhum Kanchanapimai said that between March 27 and 28, the number of visitors to crowded areas fell by 71 per cent, while 67.9 per cent of residents followed the social-distancing measure.
He said if 95 per cent of people strictly abided by the Public Health Ministry’s measures, the prevention of Covid-19 in the country would become very effective and a success.
