Summer heat makes Bueng Kan road ‘explode’

Extremely high temperatures in Bueng Kan province have made a concrete road expand and “explode”.

Workers at a rubber plantation in Somsanuk district reported the explosion after noticing pieces of concrete strewn around.
Upon inspection, local officials found the road had developed a 5-metre deep crack and some pieces of concrete had apparently risen up to a metre high.
The road is now closed for reconstruction.
Boonserm Puangpet from the provincial Department of Highways said the ferrocement used to construct the road was completely waterproof and does not release moisture when exposed to heat. This makes the pressure build up inside and it eventually explodes.
