Vietnam to resume rice exports from May 1

Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Tuesday (April 28) gave the nod to the Ministry of Industry and Trade to resume normal rice exports from May 1.

According to VGP news, a government news source, Vietnam had set the goal to ship six million tons of rice this year but the government had to tighten rice exports last month due to the Covid-19 outbreak, drought and saltwater intrusion to ensure national food security, according to PM Phuc.
The premier said he had dispatched several inter-ministerial delegations on fact-finding tours to many localities and learned that the nation can export 6.5 to 6.7 million tons this year.
Also, the Covid-19 outbreak has been contained with the number of patients unchanged at 270 and no fatalities.
The new situation allows the country to restart business and production operations as it is a pressing requirement to secure jobs and growth.
The resumption of rice exports is expected to help ease difficulties faced by farmers, said PM Phuc.
He has also tasked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to keep a close watch on rice production, reserves and exports to ensure prompt responses.
