Education Ministry offers alternatives for schools that can’t reopen

Education Ministry offers alternatives for schools that can’t reopen

Alternatives have been made available if schools cannot reopen as planned as children’s health and schooling is of utmost priority, Education Minister Nataphol Teepsuwan said on Saturday (May 2).

State schools are scheduled to reopen on July 1 for the next academic year.

The minister said the alternatives will applied on a case-by-case basis. For instance, in areas where Covid-19 cases are high, students will be taught via online platforms or through the Distance Learning Television (DLTV) channels, which have been in place for several years for remote provinces.

In these cases, around 80 percent of the curriculum will be assigned by the Education Ministry, while the remainder will be designed to match the local context depending on each teacher or school’s decision.

The Education Ministry will also focus on granting longer breaks between lessons, cut down on examinations and suspend activities that are not necessary by focusing on just the main subjects.

Trials for both DLTV and online platforms will start from May 18.

Three DLTV channels will be devoted to kindergarten level, while 10 channels will cover elementary to secondary school, including one channel for non-formal education. Students will also be given access to several online platforms for them to choose subjects that interest them.
Meanwhile, high-school students will learn via DEEP (Digital Education Excellence Platform) along with interactive lessons depending on the readiness of both teachers and students. Three additional DLTV channels will be set up, plus one for vocational lessons, with lessons taught by teachers from top schools.

Nataphol admitted that though the Covid-19 situation in Thailand is getting better, the challenges faced by the education sector have only just started.
