Facelift for Chao Phraya piers before restrictions fully lifted
The Marine Department is speeding up renovation of piers on the banks of the Chao Phraya River so they are ready to handle the crowd of commuters once restrictions are lifted.
Officials said the department’s director-general Witthaya Yamoung oversaw the operations at Bangkok’s Saphan Phut Pier on Friday (May 8).
“The department is building public toilets and improving the landscaping. Five other piers, namely Nonthaburi, Rama VII, Phra Pinklao Bridge, Thewet and Sathorn will also be renovated,” an official said, adding that the size of the toilets will depend on the number of commuters each pier services.
“Medium-sized public toilets will comprise two toilets for men, three for women and one for disabled people, while small-sized ones will comprise a unisex toilet and a separate one for the disabled,” he said.
“The public toilet at the Saphan Phut Pier is almost 70 per cent ready and should be completed by June,” he said, adding that apart from providing services to commuters, the renovated piers can also serve as tourist attractions.
