Four medics questioned in ‘wombs-for-hire’ case
Four medics accused of involvement in an international “wombs-for-hire” surrogacy scheme surrendered themselves to police on Wednesday (May 27).
The unnamed suspects turned themselves in at the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division to acknowledge arrest warrants accusing them of conspiring to commit an international crime and offer surrogacy services for commercial gain.
Among them was a Bangkok doctor allegedly responsible for inseminating the wombs of surrogate mothers with embryos.
On Tuesday, police arrested a woman suspected of helping run the surrogacy operation from a house in Phra Pradaeng district, Samut Prakan.
Police said that about 10 suspected members of the surrogacy ring are being sought, several of them are doctors or medically trained.
Those who have given themselves up already have been interrogated and released on Bt220,000 bail surety.
Several other suspects have contacted police to acknowledge the accusations against them but have not yet been called in for interrogation.
Commercial surrogacy is illegal in Thailand.
