Ex-senator Kraisak Choonhavan succumbs to cancer at 72

Former senator and MP Kraisak Choonhavan has died of oropharyngeal (base of tongue) cancer at 72.

He died at 7.10pm at Siriraj Hospital after five years of treatment, his daughter Tisana Choonhavan Marchal posted on her Facebook page on Thursday (June 11).
“I feel the proudest to be your daughter. May I be your child again in the next life,” she said in her Facebook post.
The only son of Thailand’s 17th former prime minister Chatichai Choonhavan, Kraisak was well-known for his role as a member of the advisory team during his father’s term in 1988-1991.
After his father's government was toppled by a coup in 1991, his family went abroad. A year later, Kraisak returned and joined the 1992 uprising.
He was elected senator for Nakhon Ratchasima in 2000 and chaired the Senate's committee on foreign affairs.
He joined the Democrat Party and served as deputy party leader. He became a party-list MP in the 2007 election before then-prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva dissolved the House in 2011.
Kraisak was also known for his active role in environmental and human rights movements and for being the co-founder of the Bangkok Art and Culture Center, which will hold an exhibition in his memory next week.
