Updated rules for taxis, tuk-tuks on displaying adverts

The Department of Land Transport has issued updated rules on mobile advertising as a way to increase revenue for drivers or operators of taxis, tuk-tuks and other vehicles.

In an announcement, it specified that advertisements can be installed on vehicle roofs, bodies and trunks or inside the vehicles, but the material must not be “unhealthy to drivers or passengers, and pictures or texts of the advertisements must be approved by the department or not be illegal”.
Also, the advertisements should not conceal signs such as “taxi” or “taxi meter” and not be bigger than the vehicle length or width. Besides, passengers should have the option of turning off multi-media advertisements in the vehicles.
Those who violate these rules will not be allowed to display advertisements, the department said, adding that around 80,000 taxis have earned more revenue by carrying adverts on their vehicles.
