No orientation events allowed for university freshmen

In a move to curb the spread of Covid-19, the authorities have told universities to refrain from holding events to welcome first-year students.

The order signed by Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Minister Suvit Maesincee on Sunday (June 14) states that though higher education institutes are being allowed to reopen on July 1 in line with the government’s fourth phase of lifting restrictions, universities will be required to follow the guidelines issued by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).
According to CCSA regulations, all universities are required to set up screening checkpoints with thermal scanners at all entrances, ensure social distancing is maintained in classrooms and campus areas, hand sanitising gel or washing stations are provided and contact surfaces in crowded spots are cleaned regularly with disinfectant.
The order also prohibits all gatherings in a bid to curb the spread of the virus, including orientation events for new students. If it is necessary to hold these activities, then attendees must be kept a metre or two apart in open air sites or allow a 4 square metre space per person in air-conditioned areas.
Universities are also being advised to consider cutting down on classroom sessions, conducting online lessons, adjusting schedules to facilitate social distancing and reduce crowding in public areas.
