MRT Blue Line skips fare revision, current rates to continue until year-end

The MRT Blue Line, which was scheduled to adjust its fares on July 2, will continue with the current rates of Bt16 to Bt42 until December 31, Pakapong Sirikantaramas, governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) said.

The Cabinet meeting on June 30 approved the proposal of the Ministry of Transport to peg the fares of the Metropolitan Rapid Transit Chaloem Ratchamongkhon Line to alleviate people’s financial burden amid the Covid-19 crisis, he said.
“According to the MRT Blue Line concession contract between MRTA and Bangkok Expressway and Metro [BEM], the fares must be adjusted every two years based on the change in consumer price index,” he said. “The current rate is due for revision on July 2. However, due to the Cabinet’s resolution it will be extended until the year-end, while the new rate will be effective from January 1, 2021, with a minimum price of Bt17 and maximum price of Bt42.”
The 48-kilometre MRT Blue Line has 38 stations from Lak Song to Tha Phra. The maximum rate will be collected from the 12th stations onwards.
Pakapong added that MRT would continue to provide discounts to certain groups of passengers based on the current rate. “Passengers aged under 14 with height between 91-120cm, and those above 60 years old will be entitled to 50 per cent discount, while holders of student pass [age 14-23] will receive 10 per cent discount,” he added.
