Swine Farmers Association to sell pork at Bt130 per kg

Swine Farmers Association to sell pork at Bt130 per kg

The National Swine Farmers Association has organised a fair called “Pork against Covid” to sell fresh pork at Bt130 per kilogram, president Wiwat Phongwiwatthanachai said.

“We aim to sell pork at a low price to help alleviate people’s financial burden in this Covid-19 situation,” he said. “Pork to be sold at the fair will come directly from farms without going through middlemen.”
The fair is being held in Chon Buri today (July 21), before expanding to other provinces on August 7.
The Commerce Ministry had earlier reached an agreement with swine breeders to limit farm prices to Bt80 per kilo for live swine, which will keep the pork price at markets lower than Bt160. If the price rises above this level, pork exports will be restricted.
The rising price has been driven not only by increasing domestic demand as schools and businesses emerge from lockdown but also exports to countries such as China, Laos and Vietnam, which have been hit by African swine fever (ASF).
“Farmers are trying to keep the price of live swine at Bt78-79 per kg, although the cost has now risen to Bt71. The cost of raising swine has jumped around Bt100-200 per animal since last year due to farmers employing biosecurity measures to prevent ASF,” Wiwat said.
“Apart from this campaign, the association is also cooperating with the Department of Internal Trade to sell pork at a low price at the Commerce Ministry’s Blue Flag shops and Makro nationwide from today until the end of August,” he added.
