Tropical storm 'Sinlaku' making landfall in Vietnam today, while monsoon intensifies in Thailand

The category-3 tropical storm “Sinlaku” over Tokin Bay is moving west at 15 kilometres per hour speed and is forecast to make landfall in Vinh, Vietnam on Sunday (2 Aug 2020).

It is expected to downgrade to tropical depression and pass over Laos.

It lies centred at about 160km east of Vinh, at latitude19.5 degrees north, longitude 106.8 degree east with maximum sustained winds of about 65kph.

Meanwhile, a strong southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, Thailand and the Gulf. More rain is likely over Thailand with heavy to very heavy rain in some places in the North, the Northeast, the Central, the East and South. People in risky areas should beware of the severe conditions and stay tuned in for weather updates, the Meteorological department said.

The affected areas are:

On Sunday:

North: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun and Tak.

Northeast: Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Maha Sarakam, Roi Et, Yasothon, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Buri Ram, Nakhon Ratchasima and Chaiyaphum.

Central: Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Lop Buri, Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi.

East: Nakhon Nayok, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat.

South: Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Phetchaburi, Prachua Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

On August 3-4:

North: Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Sukhothai Phichit, Kamphaeng Phet, Tak and Phetchabun,

Northeast: Loei, Nong Bua Lam Phu, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen,

Nakhon Ratchasima and Buri Ram.

Central: Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Lop Buri, Kanchanaburi and Ratchaburi.

East: Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat.

South: Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Phetchaburi, Prachua Khiri Khan, Chumphon and Surat Thani.

Strong wind waves are expected in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf. Waves 2-3 metres high are forecast for the Andaman Sea, about 2 metres in the Gulf of Thailand and above 3 metres high in thundershower areas. All ships have been advised to proceed with caution and keep away from thundershowers. Small boats should keep ashore until August 4.

The category 3 tropical storm “Hagupit” over the East of Taiwan is forecast to make landfall in Taiwan and China on August 3-4. Hagupit has no significant impact on Thailand, the department said.

The department will update its advisory at 11am.
