Five hit with charges as govt takes first step in dealing with protesters

Five anti-government protesters were slapped with charges of violating the emergency decree by holding an assembly of more than five persons at the Royal Thai Army headquarters on July 20.

Leaders from political organisations as well as the Free Youth and Student Union of Thailand had gathered at the headquarters to protest against former Army deputy spokesperson’s comment criticising their July 17 rally at Democracy Monument.
The Democracy Restoration Group posted a photograph of the summons issued by Nang Lerng Police Station and said the government has been ignoring their calls to stop intimidating people who voice their opinions. The group also warned that this action will only spark more resentment and more demonstrations.
The summons said that law was being applied to control the spread of Covid-19.
